chapter 1.2 (long-term trends)
I think this could go with either chapter 1.2 or 2.3; I’m not sure which it’s more closely aligned with. I’m also apologizing in advance—since I’m neither a scientist nor a practitioner in the field, I’m not sure exactly how best to frame a research question. But as a journalist who covers many of the issues related to sustainable development and CHES, one topic I’d like to see more hard science on is ecosystem restoration. How can sustainability science help determine how to restore ecosystems—rainforests, wetlands, grasslands, etc.? Which altered landscapes should we spend money to recreate or turn back into some semblance of their previous state—and to what degree is such a thing even possible? How can we balance competing demands on such landscapes from both humans and nonhumans? Does an ecosystem services framework make the most sense, or are there other frameworks within which we should look for answers?
